Hayden family papers
Scope and Content
This collection contains scrapbooks from Julius Hayden and Evelyn Whitner, Julius' granddaughter. Julius' scrapbook contains newspaper clippings from the presidential election of 1860 as well as the first year of the American Civil War. Evelyn's scrapbook contains image clippings mostly of women, children, and animals. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s.

Administrative/Biographical History
Julius Augustus Hayden (1810-1890) was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut, to Luke Fyler Hayden (1773-1854) and Ruth Humphrey Hayden (1783-1818). In 1846, Hayden moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to work as a train conductor. A year later, he married Harriet Eliza Cone (1829-1899) and they had ten children: Elizabeth Leslie (1847-1935), Harriet Evelyn (1849-1928), Lucy Minerva (1851-1935), Ellie (1854-1855), Julia Augustus (1857-1908), Mary Gertrude (1859-1862), Julius Augustus (1862-1932), Mary (1865-1915), Nellie (1867-1954), and Ruben Cone (1871-1899). Mary Hayden married Richard H. Whitner (1861-1911) and they had two children: Evelyn (1890-1903) and Richard H. Whitner, Jr. (1893-1918), who died as a soldier in World War I.
