Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection
Scope and Contents of the Records
Nursery catalogs offer a wide variety of horticultural information, including plant introductions, agricultural development and examples of plant illustration. The Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection represents over 500 Seed, Nursery, and Supply companies. Using this collection, researchers can learn about plant cultivar introductions, verify when and how plants were used, study various types of gardening equipment, as well as gain insight into the changes in printing technology and the Nursery business in America through the years. This collection contains catalogs, price lists and other company information from Nurseries and Seed companies located chiefly in the North and Southeastern United States, but also includes a select number of international companies. Material within the collection is both historical and contemporary, with a significant gap between the late 1930s to the mid 1940s. Various types of illustrations are evident throughout this collection, from plant illustrations to photos of prominent business officers and nursery operations. Several nurseries are well represented, such as W. Altee Burpee Company, Geo W. Park, (also know as Park Seed Company), and Wayside Gardens. Also in the collection are a smaller number of catalogs, price lists and other company information from Equipment and Horticultural Supply companies selling horticultural chemicals, fertilizers and garden implements. Additions to the collection are ongoing.
