Georgia Retail Merchants Association records

 Collection
Collection number: ahc.MSS946

Scope and Content

The records of the Georgia Retail Merchants Association include three bound volumes, as well as some loose newspaper clippings, and other material. The first volume is a scrapbook including press clippings, correspondence, event programs, brochures, official rosters, and annual reports, which chronicle the growth of the Georgia Retail Merchants Association. The clippings, originally intended to be incorporated into the scrapbook, document the social functions held by the association, which were covered extensively by the local press. The second volume contains meeting minutes, dating from 1914-1920. The minutes also trace the development of the association and include a copy of the group's constitution. Some meeting minutes include membership and financial information. The third volume, a ledger, dates from 1966-1974 and contains financial information.

Administrative/Biographical History

Founded in 1914 as the Atlanta Retail Merchants Association, the Georgia Retail Merchants Association was created to conserve and promote the business and social interests of its members; to improve the general conditions of the local retail trade in Atlanta; to enhance the commercial prosperity and raise the standard of commercial integrity throughout the community; and to protect its members from dishonest practices. Throughout the years, the association included among its members Ivan E. Allen, Clarence Haverty, and M. Rich & Brothers Co., as well as many other local merchants. The association evolved to have various specific divisions for various types of retail businesses, as well as a subsidiary group, the Affiliated Trade Organizations. During the 1960s, the organization changed its name to the Georgia Retail Merchants Association.
