Grady Hospital Student Doctors Account of the Winecoff Hotel Fire

 Collection
Collection number: ahc.MSS92f

Scope and Contents of the Records

This collection contains a transcript of the comments of four doctors who served as student doctors under Dr. Charles Holloway at Grady Hospital. These four witnessed the fire and assisted patients both at the scene and in the emergency room. The first doctor interviewed was unnamed and arrived at the hospital emergency room at four in the morning. His account includes details on how the hospital’s lack of space and small staff made it difficult to handle the large amount of fire victims entering the emergency room. Dr. Wall, Dr. Hooper, and Dr. Kendrick were the other three student doctors interviewed. Their accounts discuss how they assisted at the scene of the fire by helping people from the hotel cross a ladder to the adjoining Mortgage Guarantee Building. While they helped a few survivors cross the ladder safely, most of the people they recovered were already dead from smoke asphyxiation or severe burns.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, was constructed and opened in 1913. It was named for its builder, William F. Winecoff. On December 7, 1946 the hotel caught fire with 300 registered guests inside. The first call to the fire department was made at three forty-two in the morning and at six thirty in the morning firefighters were still putting out the flames. Reports state that the fire supposedly started on the west corridor of the third floor of the hotel, from that point the flames spread to other floors. Out of the fifteen story building, the most damage was done to the seventh through twelfth floors. At the time, the building was considered fireproof if the framework of the building remained structurally sound after a fire. Because the Winecoff met this standard, the hotel was advertised to guests as being fireproof. One hundred and nineteen people died in the fire, while another ninety one were injured.
