Administrative/Biographical History
Hilda Gumm was a dancer and choreographer for the Atlanta Civic Ballet which would become the Atlanta Ballet in 1967. She served as co-director with Hildegarde Bennett in the early 1950s and also served as vice-president of the company. She choreographed numerous Atlanta Civic Ballet performances between the founding of the company in 1941 and her move into other work in the mid-1950s. She was a member of the Artist Group of the Atlanta Civic Ballet which consisted of dancers who began with the Dorothy Alexander Dance Arts Group in which Hilda Gumm held the title of prima ballerina in 1939. In 1942, she was president of the Dorothy Allison Dance Arts Group. Later, she served as Supervisor of Physical Education for Atlanta Public Schools where she introduced a dance program. She worked extensively with youth as a director of the Decatur Apprentice Company and as a dance instructor in the Atlanta School of Ballet, the Dorothy Allison School of Ballet, and the Morningside School. She also taught Atlanta public schools both before and after being a professional dancer.
