Administrative/Biographical History
Sarah Bryant Fay (1855-1936) was born to Joseph Story Fay (1812-1897) and Sarah S. Fay (1812-1887) in Woods Hole, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. She had three brothers: John Bryant Fay (1841-1849), Joseph Story Fay Jr. (1847-1912), and Henry Howard Fay (1848-1920). Her father, Joseph S. Fay, began his career in Savannah, Georgia, first as cotton merchant and then went on to practice law and became involved in city government. He later became an aboriculturist and the Vice President of the American Forestry Congress. The Fay family had residences in Woods Hole, Boston, as well as Savannah, Georgia. Sarah B. Fay, a horticulturist and philanthropist who never married, was known for her rose gardens at the Fay Estate in Woods Hole. Every summer she and her head gardener, Michael H. Walsh (1848-1922), opened the Fay Estate grounds to the public for a rose exhibition and tour of the Fay private gardens. Sarah dedicated her life to her gardens and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society honored her dedication with their prestigious Gold Medal Award.
