Administrative/Biographical History
Phillip Campbell McDuffie (1884-1964), a lawyer and founder of Garden Hills Corporation, established Garden Hills within the neighborhood of Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1925. It is located between Piedmont Road and Peachtree Road. Construction continued until 1941. The developers envisioned three sections within Garden Hills: the Peachtree Section from Peachtree Road to Rumson Road, the Brentwood section from North Hills Drive to Piedmont Road, and the Country Club Section between them. In 1927 Alhambra Apartments was one of the first apartment buildings built in the neighborhood. In the 1930s a neighborhood swimming pool was built. Garden Hills Historic District includes Garden Hills Elementary School, built in 1938; and North Fulton High School, built in 1932, which was acquired by the Atlanta International School in 1993. In 1987 Garden Hills Historic District was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
