Scope and Content

This collection contains ephemera found in the Cherokee Garden Library historic book, Floral Keepsakes (1854) by John Keese (1805-1856). The book was owned and inscribed by sisters Sweetie and Mary Lizzie Meguiar. Items include correspondence and essays written by the Meguair sisters while attending College in Kentucky. Also a part of the collection are letters from friends, such as Helen Mary Shelby (1857-1904), also a student of the same college. The essays cover topics such as: Mary, Queen of Scots, music and flowers, college life for women, dreams, home, memories, flattery, and farewells. Items of particular interest are dried flowers from bouquets and a cross-stitched bookmark.

Administrative/Biographical History

Jimmie "Sweetie" Meguiar (1860-1954) and her sister Mary Lizzie Meguiar (1858-1940) were born in Springfield, Tennessee, in Robinson County, to James M. Meguiar (1822-1862) and Sallie Couts (1832-1915). They attended Louisville Female Seminary, (also known as Louisville Female College), in Kentucky. In 1878 Sweetie Meguiar married Walter Wood Eckles (1856-1922) and they had two daughters: Georgia Hooper (1882-1968) and Bessie M. Eckles (1887-?). Mary Lizzie Meguiar married Daniel Latimer Durrett (1839-1902) in 1878. Durrett was a tobacco dealer in Springfield. They raised five children together: Minnie, Sallie, Ola, Thomas and James.
