Administrative/Biographical History
The Thirteen Club was founded in 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia, by thirteen men from various businesses and professional fields: George S. Craft (1909-1995), John J. Poole (1909-1986), Abraham Thomas Bradbury (1902-1992), Darwin W. Clanton (1902-1997), William R. Crowe (1908-1990), Charlie L. W. Bird (1907-1993), Grady A. Lee (1899-1981), John L. Conner (1910-1956), Ivan Allen Jr. (1911-2003), John Armour (1901-1985), Boyce L. Graham (1905-1982), William Davis Jr. (1912-2005), and Clifford W. Hendrik (1910-1979). The club later expanded beyond these thirteen members, but continued to call itself the Thirteen Club. At each meeting, club members discussed an academic topic from a variety of fields, such as science, literature, history, and politics. The club frequently invited guest speakers to elaborate on chosen topics.
