Scope and Content

This collection contains a farm record, account books, and daily diaries belonging to various members of the Kell family. The farm record belonging to John McIntosh Kell gives information regarding crops and livestock for the Kell's farm in Sunny Side, Georgia, south of Atlanta, Georgia. The account books show the many different expenses the family had including payment of the servants and purchasing of household goods. The daily diaries were kept by Blanche Monroe Kell (1836-) after Kell's death in 1900. The diaries include a few lines for each day and contain such information as the planting of vegetable gardens and different flowers, the births, deaths, and sicknesses of the various family members, and local news of Sunny Side, Georgia. The diaries also contain inventories of the fruits the family canned and tells what books Blanche Monroe Kell was reading and her impressions of each book.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Kell family lived in Sunny Side, Georgia, near Griffin, Georgia. John McIntosh Kell was Captain of the Confederate ship Alabama. He was married to Blanche Monroe. They had six children: two sons and four daughters who lived to adulthood. The Kell family was spread throughout Georgia and letters were often written to Athens, Valdosta, Tifton, and Jessup, Georgia. Beginning in 1881, Kell served as Adjunct General of Georgia. He kept this position until his death in 1900. Also beginning in 1881, Kell served as the keeper of public buildings and grounds at the State Capitol. This position continued into the mid 1890s. Additional biographical information about the Kell family has not been determined.
