Scope and Content

This collection contains many of Alex Hitz's business and personal papers. Included are sociel security records, tax return, military records, and general business papers, both private practice and city commission. Hitz also assembled a "Compilation of the State's Grantees to All Land Lots in Fulton County." A family history and genealogy records are also included. The collection also contains Hitz's collection of programs from various Atlanta Theaters.

Administrative/Biographical History

Alex Hitz was born on May 16, 1893 in Washington D.C. He graduated from Georgetown's School of Law in 1915. Hitz served int the United States Army between 1918 and 1919 and was an active member of the Reserve Corps afterward. Alex Hitz and Elizabeth Crawford were married in June of 1920. Hitz practiced law in Atlanta for approximately 50 years, both privately and as the special assisstant to the Fulton County Attorney. He was distantly related to J.Edgar Hoover, former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
