Eleanor Hand Peoplestown neighborhood essay and interviews with Henry Phipps and Grace Barksdale
Scope and Content
This collection contains an essay written by Eleanor Hand entitled "A Re-Viewing of Peoplestown" in which she presents a history of Peoplestown, a neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. Specifically, she analyses it’s geographical development in relation to the railroad tracks, housing trends, racial prejudice against its residents, the Civil Rights Movement, and her hope for the future of the neighborhood. The collection also has two recordings in which Eleanor Hand interviews Henry Phipps and Grace Barksdale about their lives and the history of the Peoplestown. Phipps discusses civil rights demonstrations he attended; community organizations such as Equal Opportunity Atlanta and the Model Cities Program; shops owned by Jewish residents; and churches. Barksdale talks about generational changes; the Peoplestown Revitalization Corporation; her efforts to improve schools and healthcare, particularly at Grady Memorial Hospital; and her career in nursing.
