Scope and Content

This collection contains documents from the Atlanta Women’s Poetry Workshop (AWPW) as well as articles and poetry written by Janet Rechtman and other Atlantans. Materials include feminist newsletters, AWPW correspondence regarding grant applications and non-profit tax laws, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax exemption documents, AWPW member ephemera, a poetry booklet from the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, and a poetry reading poster advertisement from the Atlanta neighborhood Little Five Points.

Administrative/Biographical History

Janet Elizabeth Rechtman (1948- ) was born to Melvin ‘Melvie’ Rechtman (1921-2013) and Bettie Rosenblatt Rechtman (1925-2013). She married Harold Douglas Aiken (1944- ) and they have two children: Brett Mitchell Aiken (1967- ) and Courtney Elizabeth Aiken (1975- ). Rechtman started her work with nonprofits when she chartered the Atlanta Women’s Poetry Workshop in 1976. She later transitioned to nonprofit consulting as well as entrepreneurship in marketing and employee communications. She received her Ph.D. in leadership and change from Antioch University in 2008. Rechtman became a senior fellow at the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute where she conducts research in civic engagement, nonprofit development, and philanthropic capacity building.
