Administrative/Biographical History

Julius Regenstein (1826-1914) and Max Kutz (1848-1916) established Regenstein & Kutz in 1871. Julius married Max's sister, Matilda Kutz (1845-1929, and together they had eight children: Bertha Regenstein Schack (1865-1933), Meyer (1869-1946), Seligman (1871-1931), Joseph (1874-1946), Belle R. Wolff (1876-1965), Louis (1878-1962), Essie Regenstein Cerf (1881-1949), and Minnie Regenstein (1883-1897). The store carried general merchandise and dry goods, including millinery and shoes. It was known for being the first wholesale millinery house established in Atlanta as well as the first department store in the city to hire female sales clerks. After purchasing the other half of the firm's interest from Kutz in 1884, Regenstein partnered with his brothers, Gabriel (1823-1897) and Moses (1833-1901) under the name Regenstein Bros. This partnership later dissolved and Julius used the name J. Regenstein for the store until his sons became partners and they changed the name to J. Regenstein Co. In 1976 the Regenstein family sold the business to Jack Melton and in the 1990s the last store closed.
