Scope and Content

This collection contains Emily Jane Winkler Bealer's diary in which she reflects on domestic life as an impoverished widow during Reconstruction in Atlanta. Topics include raising and educating her children, financial and business affairs, and social and church life. The collection also includes a typed transcript and biographical notes written by Bealer's great-granddaughter, Emily Bealer Calhoun II. These notes contain research on people and businesses referenced in the diary.

Administrative/Biographical History

Emily Jane Winkler Bealer (1833-1908) was born in Savannah, Georgia, to Shadrach Nicholas Winkler (1790-1842) and Jane McFarland Winkler (1793-1851). In 1859 she married George Baxter Bealer (1822-1870), born in Grahamville, South Carolina, to William Bealer (approximately 1780-1830) and Henrietta Villard (approximately 1790-1850). George Baxter Bealer was a widower and a Baptist preacher. Emily and George Bealer settled in Atlanta and had four children, Alexander Winkler Bealer Sr. (1860- 1921), Gertrude Eloise Bealer (1864-1910), Pierre McFarland Bealer (1867-1954) and George Emile Bealer (1870-1911). Bealer published Ruremonde: A story for children in 1879.

Administrative/Biographical History

Emily Bealer Calhoun II (1925-2010) was born in Atlanta to Roy Emmett Calhoun (1894-1926) and Emily Bealer (1895-1983). She was descended from Emily Jane Winkler Bealer through Alexander Winkler Bealer Sr. Calhoun earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mercer University, a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia, and a Master of Arts in Librarianship from Emory University. She was an archivist and librarian at the Georgia Department of Archives and History. She self-published excerpts of Bealer's diary A Lady of Atlanta in 2001, a volume of her father's poetry in 2008, and at the time of her death was editing the journal of her uncle, Shadrach Winkler (1834-1858).
