James married Abigail Charity Smith (1840-1892) in 1868 and they had five children: Olia (1870-1917), Gratlan (1871-1948), Abigail (1874-?), William (1878-?), and Effie I. (1880-1967). James later married Ada Claxton (1860-1929) in 1894 and they had one child, John Claxton (1896-?).
