This collection contains correspondence, articles, and ephemera compiled by Wesley Thomas Hargrett. Of particular note are letters that reference slavery in the South and everyday life in the 19th century. Other items of note include pay vouchers for members of the armed services in the United States and England.

Administrative/Biographical History
Wesley Thomas Hargrett (1862-1945) was born in Worth County, Georgia to Shepherd Thomas (1833-1872) and Barbara Hargrett (1841-1889). He married Leila Fontain Warnell (1866-1944) in 1887, and they had at least nine children: Wesley (1890-1974), Haines (1890-1932), Charles (1911- 1992), Felix (1902-1988), Robert Lee (1904-1978), Leila Medford (1906-1997), Adelaide Rousseau (1896-1976), Lester (1902-1962), and Clyde Warnell (1894-1976). Hargrett worked for many railroad lines, including the Gulf Line Railway Company; the Hawkinsville and Western Railway Company; the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad Company; the Brunswick and Western Railroad Company; the Central of Georgia Railway; the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railway; and the Tifton & North Western Railroad Company. During his career he served as president of the Live Oak Railroad, the Perry Railroad, and the Gulf Railroad. In addition, he held several government positions in Tifton, Georgia, including tax assessor in 1891 and mayor in 1921.
