Scope and Content

This collection contains Grace Hyatt’s memoirs which she composed in intervals between 1980 and 2002. It includes genealogical accounts of the Lorentzson family and several accounts of her life and that of her husband, Spurgeon. Most of these accounts are recollections of her teaching career in Brunswick, Collins, and Canton, as well as her courtship with Spurgeon.

Administrative/Biographical History

Grace Lorentzson Hyatt (1910-2011) grew up in Brunswick, Georgia. She taught English composition at Collins High School in Collins, Georgia, from 1930-1934, and later moved back with her family to teach at Brunswick High School. In 1935 she married Spurgeon Hyatt (1904-1987) from Canton, Georgia, and had three sons: Thomas, Ken, and Wayne. Hyatt lived and taught in Canton until she moved to Roswell in 1992.
