Administrative/Biographical History

The Litterbug No project was founded in 1975 by former heavyweight boxer and radio broadcaster Elmer Rush (1937-2013) to combat litter and garbage around public housing in Atlanta. Working in partnership with the Samuel L. Jones Boys’ Club where he served as Assistant Director, Rush organized a parade, a dance contest, and other events to boost the project's visibility. The project's goal was to rally community support for city sanitation and to make Atlanta “The Cleanest City in the Nation” by 1976. Litterbug No received the endorsement of city and state officials and was lauded by local broadcasting stations, civic organizations, and the Atlanta Bicentennial Commission.
