Administrative/Biographical History

The town of Tate, Georgia, was named in honor of the Tate family. Colonel Stephen Tate (1832-1901) fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and later founded the Georgia Marble Company in 1884. He married Eliza Dabney Buffington (1842-1889) and had five children, including Colonel Samuel Tate (1860-1938), who built Tate House on the family estate in Tate, Georgia. The Tate House was constructed out of Georgia pink marble and later became a hotel and event venue after the death of Samuel's sister Florence (1875-1970).
