In 1934, fourteen local garden clubs in Atlanta, Georgia hosted the first Atlanta Flower Show. This tradition continued until the final show was held in April 1969 at Lenox Square Auditorium. In 1987, after an eighteen-year hiatus, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Atlanta Market Center Trade Shows revived the Atlanta Flower Show, under the direction and vision of Ann Crammond, Executive Director of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The Flower Show included competitions, speakers, and exhibits based on an annual theme to help promote and support the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Six years later, in 1993, the Atlanta Flower Show Committee separated from Atlanta Market Center Trade Shows and formed a new non-profit organization named the Southeastern Flower Show. In 1994, the Flower Show opened in the Ponce Square exhibit space. Since then the Southeastern Flower Show has been held at several Atlanta venues (City Hall East, Atlanta Exposition Center, Georgia World Congress Center, and Cobb Galleria Centre). The show has broadened its support of the community by building and creating a Legacy Garden each year by contributing valuable plants and resources from the event to nonprofit organizations. Some of those organizations include the Samuel L. Jones Boys and Girls Club, Oakland Cemetery, the Horticultural Therapy Garden at Wesley Woods, the Shepard Spinal Center, and the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory. The Southeastern Flower Show, under the direction of the Southeastern Horticultural Society since 2008, is dedicated to, “promoting horticultural excellence and the conservation of our natural environment and to organize an annual flower and gardening show with the continuing goal of being the premier juried gardening and horticultural event in the Southeast.”
