Scope and Content

This collection consists of an enlistment document declaring Curtis J. Hill's intent to enlist as a soldier in the army of the State of Georgia for a period of three years. The document is signed by the commanding officer of the 1st Georgia Regulars, Captain William J. Magill, and includes Hill's mark (in lieu of signature) and physical description.

Administrative/Biographical History

Curtis Jefferson Hill (1837-1893) was born in Georgia and was a farmer in Cobb County, Georgia, when he enlisted as a private in Company F, 1st Georgia Regulars, on 19 March 1861. He was either wounded or became ill while serving with his unit in Savannah, Georgia, and was hospitalized there in July 1861. He married Mary Emmeline Porter (1844-1910) and the couple had three children: Israel E. (b. 1880); Bob L. (b. 1882); and Minnie (b. 1887).
