Administrative/Biographical History
The Atlanta Opera was formed in 1979 with the merger of the Atlanta Lyric Opera Co. and Georgia Opera, Inc., and was initially called Atlanta Civic Opera Association. The name was changed to Atlanta Opera in 1985. The Atlanta Opera has grown since its establishment by increasing both the number of performances and the number of operas performed in a season. The Atlanta Opera seeks to establish itself as a "major artistic presence in the Southeast" and to serve the educational and cultural needs of the community. The educational outreach division, known as the Atlanta Opera Studio, formed in 1980 to serve the community's youth. This division of the company tours Atlanta area elementary, middle, and high schools. The opera company is supported both by the Friends of the Atlanta Opera, which formed in 1983, and the Atlanta Opera Guild, established in 1947. In addition, the Atlanta Opera has attracted corporate sponsorship. The Board of Directors manages the opera's affairs and consists of several committees, including the Executive Committee. William Fred Scott was the artistic director for years 1985-1991. Alfred D. Kennedy was appointed General Manager in 1986 and did much to promote the success of Atlanta Opera.
