The Duke family resided in or near Jefferson, Georgia during the 1920s-1930s. One family member, Lucy Duke, attended Maxeys Hill Grammar School, and both Lucy Duke and Ola Duke served as officers of the local chapter of the Grand United Gospel Aid Society. The Grand United Gospel Aid Society described their mission as raising funds for the benefit of relief, sick and deceased members. C.B. Johnson, Step. P. Echols, M.P. Pie, Ben Cox, and Squire Fleming founded the organization in October 1885 and in 1920 it had seventy-eight lodges in Georgia and membership exceeded 3,000.
