Scope and Content

The collection consists of letters from William N. Mattison to his wife. The letters describe the hard living conditions of the soldiers, the battle locations of their regiment, and his task of recovering soldiers from hospitals and returning them to the regiments. His regiment moved often. His letters indicate that he was stationed at Camp Hampton Rickean; Camp Wappoo, South Carolina; Marietta, Georgia; Corinth, Mississippi; West Point, Mississippi; Sattillo, Mississippi; near Harrison, Tennessee; Camp Dunlap, Tennessee; near Knoxville, Tennessee; near Rutherford County, Tennessee; and finally near Dalton and Marietta, Georgia. His last letter of record dates 25 June 1864.

Administrative/Biographical History

William N. Mattison (1830?-) was a Second Lieutenant in the Confederate Army, Company I, South Carolina 19th Infantry Regiment. He was born in Abbe or Abbeville, South Carolina, and married Nancy Elvira (Latimar) Mattison (1840?-). Nancy Latimar was widowed and living with her parents, Stephen and Ellen Latimar, in Abbeville, South Carolina in 1880. Nancy Elvira Mattison was still alive in 1920 and living in Abbeville, South Carolina with her daughter, C. A. (Mattison) Jamerson (1865?-). Additional biographical information about William Mattison has not been determined.
