Hugh Anderson Haralson Letterbook
Scope and Content
The collection consists of an indexed letter book of Hugh A. Haralson and correspondence addressing personal and professional topics. Author name and corresponding page number arrange the letter book index alphabetically. The collection documents issues concerning the average Southern citizen during the antebellum years. Some issues discussed include agriculture in Coweta County, Georgia, pension laws, states’ rights, land claims, Indian affairs, legislation, land grants and sales, slavery, railroads, 1836 Creek Indian War, and congressional districts. Clay’s Compromise, the Committee of 13, the Nashville Convention of 1850, Millard Fillmore, and the Wilmot Proviso are some of the more relevant issues discussed in several letters. The cultivation and sale of cotton and the weather, as it related to agricultural matters, are also common themes.

Administrative/Biographical History
Hugh Anderson Haralson (b. 1805 – d. 1854), born near Penfield, Georgia, graduated from Franklin College (University of Georgia) in 1825, and was admitted to the bar in 1825. He married Caroline M. Lewis on November 27, 1828 in Greene County, Georgia. He practiced law in Monroe, Georgia, and LaGrange, Georgia, and pursued agricultural activities. He was a member of the Georgia General Assembly from 1831 to 1832, and the State Senate from 1837 to 1838. He also served in the Georgia State Militia as a major general, from 1838 to 1850. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives, March 4, 1843-March 3, 1851. After serving in Congress, he resumed his law practice in LaGrange, Georgia until his death in 1854.2 Additional descriptive information regarding Hugh Anderson Haralson has not been determined.
