Scope and Content

The Adolphus W. Search papers include a voucher for payment received by Search during his leave of absence from August 31, 1864 to February 28, 1865, which was authorized under special order #81, most likely to recruit volunteers in Ohio. The voucher is signed by J. V. Holliway, paymaster. An African-American servant, James, accompanied Search during his leave of absence.

Administrative/Biographical History

Adolphus (Adalphus) W. Search was born circa 1841 in Muskingum, Ohio. He served as first sergeant, adjutant, and captain in the 78th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry. The 78th Infantry, formed in 1861, was recruited from the state at large. In January 1864, the regiment reenlisted as a veteran regiment and joined General William T. Sherman in Acworth, Georgia. The 78th participated in engagements at Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta, before joining Sherman’s march to the sea. The company was mustered out on July 11, 1865.

Search married Louisa M. White and they had 3 children together. According to the 1870 U.S. Census, Search was employed as a school teacher after the war. Additional biographical information about Adolphus W. Search has not been determined.
