Scope and Content

This collection contains copies of a diary of John Wesley Fincher regarding his personal and religious experiences during the Mexican War; a letter written on October 28, 1846, possibly describing Mr. Fincher's experiences in the war; a soldier's discharge from the First Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; and a newspaper article regarding letter of J. Pufus Smith, a friend of Mr. Fincher's, who describes his Mexican War experiences.

Administrative/Biographical History

John Wesley Fincher (1824-1898) was born in Canton, Georgia and died in Whitfield County, Georgia. Fincher moved from Canton to Dalton in 1853 where he ran a mercantile business. While residing in Whitfield County he was Tax Collector for eight years. He also served in the Mexican War from 1846-1847.
