Administrative/Biographical History

George Washinton Collier (1813-1903) was born to Meredith Collier and Elizabeth Gray, one of fourteen children. In 1823 he moved with his family to DeKalb County, Georgia. One of his early jobs was to carry mail betweeen Decatur, Georgia and Allatoona, Georgia. He continued his career with the postal service by eventually becoming Postmaster of Atlanta. He owned a large amount of land in the Atlanta area including Five Points. He owned a general store and built the Aragon Hotel in 1892.
