Administrative/Biographical History
The Georgia Mineral Society was founded in February 1935. Since its inception the primary goal of the group is to provide an educational outlet on the subjects of geology and earth sciences. Early in the organizational history, monthly “field trips” were held to explore mineral deposits in Georgia. Other activities included lectures, gem shows, recruitment programs, student programs through the Junior Industry Program, and publication of a newsletter, Tips and Trips. Membership meetings have been scheduled on a monthly basis, although quarterly gatherings were also common. At the organizational meeting, the adoption of a constitution and by-laws followed the appointment of a President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer as the only officers to the group. The organization was incorporated by the State of Georgia in 1939.
