Scope and Content
This collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, ledgers, receipts, legal papers, advertisements, insurance papers, newspaper clippings, patent documents, and other papers pertaining to Augustus Robert Jones and the Jones family. The bulk of the collection is comprised of Jones's personal correspondence and financial records about the family cotton business. Also included are pocket diaries containing records of business and household purchases, printed papers such as price lists and agricultural advertisements, and cotton futures. Of particular interest are Abraham Jones's Confederate service records and Augustus Jones's post-war oath of allegiance to the United States government.

Administrative/Biographical History
Augustus Robert Jones (1819-1887) was born in Milledgeville, Georgia. He was a merchant farmer with holdings in Polk County, Georgia; Cedartown, Georgia; Rockmart, Georgia; and Umatilla, Florida. He was the son of attorney John Jones (1791-1880) and Martha W. Jenkins Jones (1795-approximately 1850). His siblings were John A. (Honest Jack), Seaborn, Abraham, Florida, Thomas, Edwin, and Bett. Augustus married Melissa Gordon Otterson Jones (1833-1905) in 1856 and they had eight children survive infancy: Seaborn J. (1858-), Martha Walton (1861- ), Margaret Ruth (1863- ), Abraham (1864-1938), Samuel Otterson Jones (1865-1947), Sarah Bugg Moore (1867-1916), Mary (Mamie) L. (1869-1913), and Louise Cochran (1877-1918).
