Scope and Content

This collection contains chiefly photocopies of articles, papers, clippings, and other research material covering a variety of landscape history topics. Also included is biographical research on women landscape architects such as Rose Ishbel Greely and Marian Cruger Coffin. Additionally, seminar materials from the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Radcliffe Seminars Program from the Landscape Institute of Harvard University provide further information on American and British garden history. Of special interest are seminar materials relating to the gardens of Gertrude Jekyll as well as Arts and Crafts gardens.

Administrative/Biographical History

Judith B. Tankard (1942- ), originally from New York, is an author, lecturer, preservation consultant, and independent scholar specializing in American and British garden history. She is the author of several landscape history books, such as Ellen Shipman and the American Garden (2018) andGardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement (2019) as well as numerous articles and book reviews. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and a Master of Arts degree in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. Tankard taught at the Landscape Institute of Harvard University from 1988-2007. She also served as president and long-time board member of the Beatrix Farrand Society. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society awarded her a Gold Medal for her work in the promotion of historic New England gardens. Tankard is a frequent lecturer on topics such as the preservation of historic landscapes and pioneer landscape architects.
