Administrative/Biographical History
The Home Owner's Loan Corporation (HOLC) was a New Deal initiative originally called the Homeowners Loan Act of 1933. The corporation refinanced home mortgages to prevent foreclosure and allowed home owners to pay off their mortgages with private lenders. This refinancing helped many Atlanta families keep their homes through the Great Depression. The program ended in 1954 after funding over a million mortgages and lending out approximately $350 billion dollars.
