Administrative/Biographical History

The Perennial Garden Club of Atlanta, Georgia, was formed in 1928 for the purpose of "the study and culture of flowers; the study of landscape gardening and allied subjects; and the support and promotion, when possible, of movements to increase the general interest in the cultivation and improvement of the standard of gardens." The club joined The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. (GCG) and Rich's Garden Center in 1929. Among the club's original members are Mrs. James R. Bachman, first club president and well known Atlanta gardener, and Mrs. John L. (Adelle Bartlett) Harper, popular horticultural speaker and the first woman to own and operate a florist shop in Atlanta. Several of the club members, including Mrs. John L. Harper, left in 1935 to form the Magnolia Garden Club. The club was governed by elected officers such as president, vice president, and treasurer. Although the club did not participate in civic projects, many members were involved with GCG and participated in local flower shows.
