Jehu Neal Carter Diary Excerpts
Scope and Content
This collection consists of three photocopied pages from Jehu Neal Carter's diary. In 1857, Carter traveled by rail car through Georgia and Tennessee. Carter records his impressions of Knoxville, Tennessee; Dalton, Georgia; and Atlanta, Georgia. While in Atlanta, he describes the town "as a city of Railroads and from all appearances of Do Nothings and loffers." [sp] He attended the First Baptist Church "preaching to the colored people."

Administrative/Biographical History
Jehu Neal Carter (1817-1858) was born in Warren County, Georgia to Jesse Carter (1793-1868) and Sarah Neal Carter (1797-1855). He lived on his father's extensive plantation in Talbot County, where he was a farmer. On November 26, 1840, Jehu Neal Carter married Mary Flemming (b. 1824) from Warren County. They had at least six children: William Luther Carter; Sarah Elizabeth Carter; John N Carter; Mary Susan Carter; Robert F Carter; and Martha Julia Carter. Jehu Neal Carter died in 1858.
