Administrative/Biographical History

The Virginia Avenue Garden Club of Atlanta, Georgia, was formed in 1933 by women residing on Virginia Avenue in the Virginia Highland neighborhood. The club's purpose included encouraging the growth of gardening interests in the community, fostering neighborhood friendliness, promoting community spirit, and maintaining a cleaner Virginia Avenue. The club was a member of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs. The club was governed by elected officers such as president, vice president, and treasurer. The club actively participated in the beautification of Virginia Avenue and supported both the Samuel M. Inman School and the Carnegie Branch Library within the school. The club also supported local area hospitals and Hillside Cottages through floral arrangements and donations.
