Scope and Content
This series primarily contains materials about the Civil Rights Movement such as unpublished manuscripts of poems, newspaper clippings, and committee notes and memorandums. Also included are a telegram about the 1963 funeral of assassinated civil rights activist, Medgar Evers, as well as speeches calling for the end of Jim Crow laws and segregation. Additionally, there are papers from the Southern Regional Council with speeches and plans to advance the rights of African Americans in the 1960s. Of particular note is a program from the 1963 March on Washington, signed correspondence from Robert F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson's statement on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, along with his signature on a White House business card.
