Series III: Contracts, 1895-1968

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series contains construction contracts and agreements between Southern Railway, private contractors, and local construction companies. These contracts document the creation, destruction, removal and relocation of depots, bridges and other masonry, rail yards, and buildings, such as offices, shops, roundhouses, and sheds. The contracts also cover railway formation such as grading for tracks, laying tracks and ties, installing equipment and machinery, and ordering supplies. Additionally, there are several contracts between 1918 to 1920, that document the nationalization of railroads by the United States Railroad Administration during World War I. Included within the contracts are correspondence, bonds, supplemental agreements, blueprints of depots, bridges, and yard buildings, and specifications. Geographically, the contracts cover a majority of the southeastern states, including Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia, and parts of the Midwest.
