Administrative/Biographical History

Marcia Bansley was born October 4, 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from Northside High School in Atlanta in 1959, she attended Vanderbilt University where she earned her bachelors in English in 1963. She earned a law degree from Emory University in 1981. As a member of the Junior League of Atlanta, in 1970 Bansley co-founded Friends of the River. Friends of the River was a non-profit, environmental organization whose mandate was to launch a community education initiative with the goal of making Georgians aware of the valuable resource the Chattahoochee River was as a recreational area, as well as a crucial water source. The organization was dedicated to the protection of the Chattahoochee Corridor. Staff members lobbied the United States Congress to pass legislation that created the Chattahoocee River National Recreation Area on August 15, 1978. The organization was in existence as late as 1984, but was later dissolved at an unknown date.
