Howard W. Newman speech "The North Georgia Cracker as a Citizen and Farmer"

Scope and Content

The collection contains a handwritten version and a typed copy of a speech titled "The North Georgia Cracker as a Citizen and Farmer," which Howard W. Newman presented at a meeting of the Georgia State Agricultural Society in Waycross, Georgia, in 1888. In the speech, Newman humorously describes the inhabitants of North Georgia through personal anecdotes. The printed copy of the speech indicates that the audience applauded throughout.

Marion Wesley Ray diary transcriptions

Poppy Garden Club photographs of Tullie Smith House and Farm

Troutman and Battey family papers

The bulk of the Troutman and Battey family papers are legal documents (many from Floyd Country) generated by those families, including deeds of indenture (many signed by Dr. Robert Battey), wills, and an abstract of title to lands in Floyd County. The collection also contains correspondence, the majority of which was sent to Colonel Hiram Bainbridge Troutman, a book of Minstrel song, and documents pertaining to Atlanta society.
