Smith Jr. Research papers include the history of textiles, potpourri, family history, the trade of enslaved persons, and Thomas Sheraton (1751-1806). Documents include notes, correspondence, periodical clippings, design plates, and appraisements. Civil War papers primarily focus on Confederate Naval financial records. Robert S. Paden photographs and drawing

This collection contains photographs of five generations of the Smith-Steele-Medlock-Davenport family gathered for Elizabeth Hawkins Smith's 93rd birthday. Also included is a watercolor drawing of Jasper Smith (1836), Martha Ellen Smith Paden's brother, who died during the American Civil War. Of special note are photographs of “Auntie Gracie” and Wilkes Smith, two formerly enslaved people who worked for the Smith family. Robert S. Paden took the photograph of Wilkes Smith.

This collection contains include tax returns, articles written by family members, programs, a bulletin, and newspaper clippings. Of particular note are recorded interviews with three members of the Smith family: Leroy Wingate (the uncle of Dorothy Smith Allen), Dorothy Smith Allen, and Robert Stuart Allen. The interviews detail growing up in Georgia during the Great Depression.

Scope and Content The collection includes warranty and indenture deeds, wills, promissory notes, contracts, title abstracts, and other legal documents pertaining to members of the Smith family, primarily David and Jane Smith, and their son Owen. Warranty and indenture deeds describe title transfers of land in the 14th District of Fulton County, land lots 46, 51, 77, 85, and 117 where David Smith owned property beginning in the 1880s.
