Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas R.R. (Thomas Reade Rootes) Cobb was the author of Georgia Laws (1851) and served as a brigadier general in the Civil War. Howell Cobb served as a congressman, senator, Governor of Georgia, United States Secretary of the Treasury under President James Buchanan, president of the provisional Confederate Congress, and major-general during the Civil War.

Luther J. Glenn (1818-1886) was born in Washington County and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1842. He married Mildred Lewis Cobb, sister of Howell and T. R. R. Cobb; they moved to Atlanta in 1851 where he formed a law partnership with Lucius J. Gartrell. Glenn was elected mayor of Atlanta in 1858 and in 1859 became the second man to serve successive terms. Glenn led Atlanta's pro-secessionist partisans in 1860 and as post commander surrendered the city to Union forces on 4 May 1865.

Luther J. Glenn's granddaughter, Sarah (Tata) Cobb Glenn, married businessman Samuel Lauchlin McBride, owner of McBride & Co. and associate with the Gate City Stone Filter Company in New York.

Additional biographical information about the Cobb, Glenn, and McBride families has not been determined.
