Biographical/Historical Note

The Sale, Simmons, and Matheson families were prominent residents of Lincoln County, Georgia. According to family tradition, Stern Simmons, Sr. moved from Halifax County, Virginia, to Lincoln County, Georgia, in the late 1700's with his wife, Grace Nagley Simmons. They had three sons: Stern, Jr.; Thomas; and John. John Simmons (1785-1827), a planter (not pictured), and his wife, Mary Ann Matheson Simmons (1788-1867), raised their family at Goshen in Lincoln County. Also pictured in the collection are their son, Stern Simmons III (1824-1853); their daughter, Frances E. Simmons (1810-1863); her husband, Peyton W. Sale (1806-1877), a planter of Lincoln County; and three of their children; John Simmons Sale (1834-1858), Frances Ann Sale (ca. 1840- ), and Sally Ann Sale (ca. 1847- ). Frances Ann Sale married Lafayette Lamar (1858- ). Additional biographical information about the Sale, Simmons, and Matheson families has not been determined.

Scope and Content Note
