Biographical/Historical Note

William Berry Hartsfield (1890-1971) served as Mayor of Atlanta for six terms (1937-1941, 1942-1961), longer than any other mayor in the history of the city. Hartsfield was educated in Atlanta public schools but did not finish high school or attend college. While working as a clerk with an Atlanta law firm in the 1920s he studied law books and publications and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1927. He married Pearl Williams in 1913 and they had two children, William Berry, Jr., and Mildred. The marriage ended in divorce in 1962. Hartsfield married Tollie Bedenbaugh Tolan later in 1962 and adopted her son, Carl. Additional biographical information about William Berry Hartsfield has not been determined.
