Biographical/Historical Note

Harry James Carr (1878-1958) entered the construction business in 1894 and incorporated H.J. Carr & Co. in 1909. He built many commercial and education buildings and constructed private homes including the Henry Heinz residence on Ponce de Leon Avenue and the Asa Candler, Jr. residence on Lullwater Parkway, both in Atlanta. Carr built his family's home on Houston Mill Road where he and his wife, Bonnie Tate Carr, raised three children. Mr. Carr was active in the Shriners, Scottish Rite, Malta Lodge #641, $ & AM and the Royal Order of Jesters. Additional biographical information about Henry James Carr and H.J. Carr & Co. has not been determined.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains photos of commercial buildings, including hotels, office buildings, parking garages, a theatre, manufacturing buildings, a YMCA, educational facilities and railroad facilities. The architects involved on these construction projects include G. Lloyd Preacher, Ivey & Crook, and Neel Reid. Photographers include Edgar Orr, Rogers & Farmer, Fishbaugh & Lee, Francis E. Price, and Reeves Studio.
