Biographical/Historical Note

Harvey T. Phillips (1824-1899) was born in New York state and moved with his family to Chattanooga, Tennessee, when a young man. He attended Dartmouth College and served as a tutor on the Dr. W. S. Stratham plantation in Grenada, Mississippi; the plantation consisted of 1300 acres and sixty slaves. In 1865 Phillips moved to Atlanta where he edited a religious newspaper and joined Benjamin B. Crew in founding a book and music store (1866) later known as Phillips & Crew Piano Co. In 1868 Phillips & Crew undertook publishing an existing magazine, Scott's Monthly Magazine, edited by Reverend W. J. Scott, and for which Phillips served as the assistant editor.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of one daguerreotype, taken approximately 1850, of Harvey T. Phillips while attending Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
