Biographical/Historical Note

Kate Thompson was born Katherine Rebecca Thompson on 10 February 1878, the third child of Charles Thompson and Sarah Glover. Kate had two older brothers, Will and Charles, and three younger brothers, Thomas, Robert, and Henry. The Thompsons were from Madison, Georgia, and Kate Thompson worked as a schoolteacher in the Atlanta City School system.

Sarah Glover was the first child of Eli Glover and Rebecca Meriwether. Their second daughter, Rebecca Meriwether Glover, married Erasmus Jordan. Eli Glover descended from Captain Eli Glover and his second wife, Lucy Seymour Fish.

Additional biographical information about Kate Thompson has not been determined.


Scope and Content Note

This collection documents the lives of several members of the Thompson, Glover, Meriwether, and Jordan families of Madison, Georgia. Also included are photographs of individuals, probably friends and family members, many of whom are unidentified. The remaining images document buildings and houses in middle Georgia and include a scrapbook documenting land auctions sponsored by the Bowman Land Company, based in Charleston, West Virginia.


Arrangement

This collection is arranged in five series: I. Family; II. Individuals and Groups; III. Buildings; IV. Cased Images; V. Bowman Land Company. Series II is further subdivided into two subseries, 1. Individuals and 2. Groups.

This series contains photographs of Kate Thompson, her immediate family, and relatives in the Glover, Jordan, and Meriwether families. Most of the items in this series are studio portraits. Images of Kate Thompson include those taken during her childhood through her twenties, with one color photograph taken at age 87. Also included are several images of her brothers at various ages and a photo of Charles F. Thompson and his entire family in front of their home in Madison, Georgia. The rest of the material consists of images of Kate Thompson's extended family including photographs of her great-grandfather and several cousins.

II. Individuals and Groups, Bulk, 1860-1900, 1855-1945

This series is divided into two subseries: A. Individuals; B. Groups. Subseries A contains portraits of identified persons. Although some of the people may be friends and members of Kate Thompson's extended family, their association is not clear. Other individuals include General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Governor Sam Houston of Texas. Subseries B consists of photographs of the Eudora High School Class of 1894 and students at North Georgia Agriculture College (now known as North Georgia College and State University) in Dahlonega, Georgia, where Will Glover Thompson was a student. The remaining material is comprised of photographs of unidentified people.

This series consists of one photograph album of images documenting land auctions sponsored by the Bowman Land Company of Charleston, West Virginia. The auctions took place in Mobile, Alabama; Bradenton, Florida; Kentucky; and West Virginia. The relationship between the Bowman Land Company and the Thompson, Jordan, Meriwether, and Glover families is unclear.
