Biographical/Historical Note

Wilbur G. Kurtz, Sr. (28 February 1882 - 1 February 1967) was born in Oakland, Illinois, raised in Greencastle, Indiana, and attended DePauw University and the Art Institute of Chicago. His parents were George H. Kurtz (1844 October - 1903) and Amanda Helen Kurtz (27 September 1847 - 8 March 1928) and he was the youngest of three children. While living in Chicago, Illinois, Kurtz worked as a draftsman, engraver, and professional illustrator. In 1903, he traveled south to Atlanta, Georgia, to interview Captain William H. Fuller (15 April 1836 - 28 December 1905) regarding his involvement in Andrews' Raid. During one of his visits with Captain Fuller he met his future wife, Annie Laurie Fuller (21 October 1884 - 2 October 1946). Kurtz married Annie Laurie on June 14, 1911, at the summer home of the bride's mother. The couple briefly lived in Indiana before permanently relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1912, so Wilbur could pursue his research pertaining to the events of the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. After Annie Laurie's death, Kurtz married Annie Rachel Pye (1895-1985) of Woodland, Georgia, in 1949. Kurtz and Annie Laurie had five children: Wilbur G. Kurtz, Jr. (1912-1991); Nelle Louise Kurtz Fambrough (1913-2000); Henry Harrison Kurtz (1916-1988); Annie Laurie Kurtz (1921-?); and Eugene Allen Kurtz (1923-2006).

After his move to Atlanta, Kurtz's professional career followed a variety of paths but some of the most significant and memorable involved his work with the filming of Gone With the Wind, 1938-1939, and the Georgia Historical Marker program in the 1950s. Selznick International Pictures hired him as historian and technical advisor for Gone With the Wind due to his association with Margaret Mitchell and his knowledge of the Battle of Atlanta. Kurtz and his wife, Anne Laurie, lived in Culver City, California, during the production of the film to provide onsite advice during filming, conduct research, and design sets and props. He also served as technical advisor for two other films: Song of the South, 1946, based on a series of stories written by Atlantan Joel Chandler Harris; and The Great Locomotive Chase, 1957, based on Kurtz's primary research topic, Andrews' Raid. In the early 1950s, the Georgia Historical Commission contracted with him to research and write the text for a series of historical markers, primarily in the region where the Atlanta Campaign took place. He also played a key role in the 1934-1936 restoration of the Cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta as an employee of the art project division of the Works Project Administration (WPA). Kurtz also created illustrations for the Atlanta Journal and Atlanta Constitution, as well as magazine articles, murals and paintings for commercial buildings, and private commissions primarily for paintings depicting Southern historical events.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the family photographs of the Kurtz and Fuller families as well as visual materials Kurtz created and collected during the course of his career. Family photographs pertain to Kurtz and Fuller families as well as a few images from Annie Pye Kurtz prior to her marriage to Wilbur Sr. Also included are images of Wilbur Sr. and friends during his time in Chicago, Illinois. The bulk of this collection is photographic materials which support the research and field work Kurtz conducted pertaining to two events during the American Civil War: Andrews' Raid and the Atlanta Campaign. The collection also contains original works of art, primarily watercolors, which depict Southern historical scenes such as Civil War events; early Atlanta, Georgia; and private and commercial commissions of wide ranging topics. The collection also contains photographs Kurtz took of his completed work, most of which are not in this collection. In addition, there is a significant collection of sketches in various stages of completion that Kurtz utilized during the planning and creative stages of his work. Some of the sketches reflect the entire body of the final work while others are study examples he created for specific components of the piece, such as livestock, figures, and structures.

Series III: Photographs, 1868-1972, undated, 479.0 Photographs
The photograph series comprises the bulk of the personal group. Some of the individuals found in this series include Capt. William A. Fuller, Wilbur Kurtz Jr., and Wilbur Kurtz Sr. Many of the prints found in this series are represented in the negatives series as well. Kurtz would often produce several prints of the same subject at different settings during the printing process. He also seems to have been designated the family historian and consequently the collector and steward of a vast number of images for the Fuller and Kurtz families. In many instances the individual is identified but in group shots often only a few individuals are identified.

This series contains images taken and acquired by Kurtz during his research of the American Civil War, specifically Andrews' Raid. The images document a significant portion of the field work he conducted during his research of this event. Kurtz photographed many locations in panorama and also in detail. The detailed images include but are not limited to stuctures, natural and military features, and military relics. Kurtz also took great effort to be historically as accurate as possible in his artistic work and often photographed existing examples of objects and individuals dressed in period clothing to incorporate into his work. The bulk of these negatives are also represented in the photographs series of this group but not all exist in print version.

Series III: Paintings, 1886-1954, undated, 72.0 Item(s)
Kurtz produced a large collection of paintings and a few are represented in this series. The pieces are watercolors or pen and ink and primarily depict scenes of a historical nature. Of particular interest are those related to Andrews' Raid. Kurtz created pieces of the Lacy Hotel at Big Shanty, Georgia based upon his research and interviews with individuals involved with Andrews' Raid or familiar with the hotel.
Also included is a small collection of paintings by others. Most significant are the pieces related to the Atlanta Cyclorama. There are two sketches used by the artists during the creation of the canvas and six small to medium sized pieces of canvas the artists painted to use as examples while painting the cyclorama.

Series VII: Sketches, 1896-1966, undated, 715.0 Item(s)
Kurtz made use of sketches as an element of his planning and creative processes. In some cases, the sketches in this series appear to represent complete outlines of a single project but the majority are individual objects or figures utilized in a variety of projects. The most represented examples are figures in a variety of costumes, wagons, carriages, and livestock. In a limited number of examples the sketch is the final product. One such example is Big Shanty, Georgia.

Series IV: Photographs, 1859-1969, undated, 4645.0 Photographs
The bulk of this series is a photographic record of Kurtz's field studies during his research of two American Civil War events: Andrews' Raid and the Atlanta Campaign. Included are examples of structures, landscape scenes, battlefields, historical sites, and cityscapes. Kurtz arranged many of the images by event or geographic location and often would detail his observations on the reverse side of the photograph or around the border regarding the landscape and a detailed account of the event(s) that occurred at that location(s). The counties sub-series provides visual documention for a portion of the Atlanta Campaign beginning in north Georgia and ending in Atlanta, Georgia. Kurtz photographed existing structures mentioned in official reports and indicated on official maps; and battlefield features. He usually provided a few details about the specific event that occurred at the photographed location and then indicated additional information could be found in one of his notebooks, citing the notebook and page number. During the course of his research Kurtz maintained meticulous notes on his process as well as his observations, and the photographic materials he collected and created provide some of the evidence for his findings. When possible he collected images of the individuals he was researching, especially those individuals involved in Andrews' Raid. In many instances he noted the year he received the image, who supplied him with the copy or original, and brief biographical information about the individual.
Kurtz sought to be historically accurate in all aspects of his work and often gathered multiple images of the object or place from different time periods. A well represented example is the "General" and "Texas" locomotives and his observations regarding several of the photographs.
Kurtz documented a significant portion of his work as technical advisor for the production of the motion picture Gone With the Wind based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell. He photographed many of the principal actors during filming, production employees, scene sets, set designs, and production equipment. Kurtz also worked as technical advisor during the filming of The Great Locomotive Chase, a film based on Andrews’ Raid, and documented that work to a lesser extent.
