Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of images taken by photographer Bill Hull in the course of his duties at the Atlanta Historical Society. Mr. Hull frequently photographed areas in Atlanta in support of research, exhibitions, and programs at the institution. Included are images of geographic locations in the Metropolitan Atlanta region, including Buckhead, Cabbagetown, Midtown and downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Images of geographic locations show commercial buildings, parks, and street views of important intersections. The collection also contains images of several events such as parades, highway and stadium construction, the Democratic National Convention of 1988, and celebrations during the 1991 World Series.


The collection is organized into two series, (1) Geographic Locations, 1985-1991, and (2) Events and Activities, 1988-1996.

Series 1: Geographic Locations, 1985-1991

(908 color slides, 46 black and white negatives)
This series includes photographs of locations throughout the Midtown, Buckhead, and downtown areas of Atlanta, Georgia. These images include street views, businesses, residences, gardens, parks, and restaurants. Included are images of the Toy Museum of Atlanta, Buckhead Cinema ‘n’ Drafthouse, Knox Apartments, Pershing Point Apartments, Pershing Point Memorial Park, Perkins Drug Store, Lenox Square, the Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill, Colony Square, the Trolley Barn near Virginia Avenue, and the Magnolia Room outside Rich’s Department Store in downtown Atlanta. This series also contains views of prominent intersections as they changed throughout 1985. These include the intersection of Peachtree Street, Paces Ferry Road and Roswell Road, and the intersection of Peachtree Street and 13th Street.

Series 2: Events and Activities, 1988-1996

This series includes photographs of events and activities that took place throughout the Metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia in 1988, 1991 and 1996. These events include a parade celebrating Martin Luther King Day in 1991, a parade celebrating the selection of Atlanta as the site of the 1996 Olympic Games, a parade celebrating the Atlanta Braves baseball team’s participation in the 1991 World Series, the outside of the stadium where game 5 of the 1991 World Series took place, and the Democratic National Convention of 1988 at the Hall on International Boulevard. The series also contains photographs of an expressway in Atlanta being built in 1988, and the construction of Highway Georgia 400, the Georgia Dome in 1991.
