Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Carl Fisch (1907-1966) was born in Birmingham, Alabama to William F. L. Fisch and Lillian Fisher Fisch. After his father’s bakery business, American Bakeries, moved its headquarters to Atlanta, Joseph Fisch arrived with his family in Atlanta, living on Inman Circle. A graduate of Tech High School, he attended Emory and Oglethorpe Universities. In 1926 he married Josephine Clarke. After their father sold his interest in American Bakeries, Joseph and his brother Howard launched Highland Bakery on Highland Avenue in the early 1930s. Joseph Fisch was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish, however, his passion was photography. He died in October, 1966 in Atlanta.

Included are photographs of the Georgia State Capitol, Atlanta City Hall, Federal Penitentiary, Atlanta Naval Air Station, Carnegie Library, Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, The Journal Building, Terminal and Union Stations, Cathedral of St. Philip, Christ the King Cathedral, Glenn Memorial Church, Emory University, Oglethorpe University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory Hospital, Georgia Baptist Hospital (now known as Atlanta Medical Center), Crawford Long Hospital, Jesse Parker Williams Hospital, Peachtree Street, Ponce de Leon Avenue, North Avenue and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The sign reads "If you are drinking, just wave, don’t stop." It is unknown where the sign was planted, but is assumed to be placed there by management of a business enterprise.
